I had created a wonderful mosaic for our high school using all 12469 classmates from the past 45 years of graduates. Currently each class photo is 2" x 3" and I am trying to create the mosaic at 24" x 36". Don't get me wrong I am good with computers as I have been a tech for 26+ years, but this pixel calculating is beyond me.

Could you tell me what the optimum size should be for each picture so I can resize them so I don't cut anyone off in the final mosaic creation?

After it is complete, I'll be happy to send you a copy of the file so you can add it to your site if you wish. It is quite impressive so far, I just need to figure out how to keep all the tiles the same size and not chop any one off out of the picture.

BTW, I just wanted to add the with the Professional version, it is GREAT!!! and I really love the capability that it can even create a log file so I can track where each classmate is in the mosaic. I am working on a way I can convert the pixel X pixel location to a tile X tile location.

Hello Donald,

I use often the Mosaic Information area, selecting pixel or inch, after I set the mosaic parameters. In that area I can see the size of each tile, the number of tiles (total and by row/column) and the final size of the mosaic. You may select the Portrait pattern (are you using portrait images?). Do you want to make a mosaic with over 12000 tiles printed on 24"x36"? The tiles will be quite small, each around 0.30"x0.20". Do you want to use each of the 12000 tiles at least once? So we need more tiles in the mosaic, some will be duplicated.

Once you have an approximate count of tiles that you want use, then you will get in the Mosaic Information area the various values. So you can fine tune the size settings to avoid cropping. For example you can choose to have 125 tiles x row, then you can choose to have 100x75 pixels for each tile (a perfect 4:3 aspect ratio). To avoid any crop we set the
- final mosaic size to a width of 125x100 = "12500 pixels"
- and the tile size to a value of "125 tiles x row".

But still the last row can be cropped, to avoid this we must use a mosaic image that has a correct aspect ratio. If we want 100 tiles x column then our total height will be 100tiles x 75 pixels each tile = 7500 pixels. So the final mosaic will be 12500x7500 pixels and we need a input image that has exactly such an aspect ratio.

Thank-you for the FAST reply.

Yes, I realize the tiles will be very small as I have tried creating a few samples in the mean time.

I already resized the original mosaic size and will plug your numbers in and see what happens. Thanks for all you help. I'll send you a copy once I get it completed!!! :)
