You need to use a lower value for the distance between duplicated tiles. Try a value of 2 or 1.

I too get lots of black tiles.
I'm using 0 to prevent duplicates from being used.
Does this have any impact on the black tiles?
I noticed that using fewer tiles/row has greater success w.r.t. black tiles.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

If you prevent duplicating tiles be sure to have more images in your collection than in the mosaic. If you have 1000 images in your collection and you do a mosaic with 2000 tiles of course you will get 2000 black tiles.

use higher values.

I find that if I have 1000 images and set it to use 1000 tiles then I get exactly ONE black tile every time.

Is this because of the algorithm always comparing two tiles to see which is best or something, so when it gets to that last tile it has nothing to compare it with and thus doesn't use it?

I would REALLY like to be able to use exactly all the tiles I have.

Oh maybe there is a little bug.....can't you just include 1001 images?

Black holes seem to ocurr from over constraining the process (too few source images, restricting to limited flipping, limiting the number of times an image can be used, etc.). Once I get a mosaic to the point where I want it but there are some black holes, I manually fill the holes with images from the final mosaic using PhotoShop or Photo Elements. This results in much quicker resolution than tweeking the program parameters.

What might also work well is a "Confuddler" which basically takes the spot, and the underlay to put them through a process like:
1. pixelate
2. blur
3. mesh with the closest other thing keeping a nice clean image
4. mix and match!
